[Boardgame] King of Tokyo

Love and hating Blogger app.  I had this drafted via smartphone and it didn't sync with the browser and hang!  RAGE!  Retyping this, OMFG!  And when retyping, everything that's typed is not the same huhu~

Last Friday, I went for boardgame session at Jack's place.  He just got this new boardgame called King of Tokyo.  I went after my Yoga class.  I was slightly hungry.  Thank god I brought along 1.5litre of water with me hee.

What's King of Tokyo?  King of Tokyo is a game from Richard Garfield, designer of Magic: The Gathering and Android: Netrunner.  Basically, it's you (the players) taking roles as monsters, robots or aliens destroying Tokyo!  Minimum 2 player max up to 6 players.  There's only three (3) of us that night.  That works to, test run.  We need to test 6 players one of these days peeps.  Anyone interested to play?

This boardgame comes with expansion.  But have yet to try that.  Expansion looks awesome!

Feature additional characters:

The setup.

Select one of the monsters out of 6 as follows:

Next, decide who starts first.  In this case, everyone roll 6 dice and whoever got the highest no. of fist will start first and decides the order.  WHY ME?!  I think I get to start first more than 3 times.  *sweat.  Now, how do we play this?

Power shuffle special cards, which is purchasable via energy cubes.  Some cards are gay FYI.

Some example of special effect cards.  The numbers on top left indicates the number of energy cubes to spend on.  You can spend 4 energy cubes to reset the 3 revealed special cards (just in case you want better cards).

The player, rolls 6 dice which is bears the following 6 symbols: 1, 2 or 3 Points of Destruction, Energy (lightning symbol), Healing (♥ symbol) and Whack (fist symbol) to determine the course of action.

You roll the 6 dice and decides which die to keep and discard in order to come up with combination that will enable you to win destruction points, hoard energy, restore your health or whack other players.  In this case, I love to leech energy for special cards!  Special cards gives you added advantage to gain more Victory Points/Energy Cubes/Beat the crap out of everyone else.

Energy cubes, how cute are these?

You gain energy cubes when you roll energy symbol.

In order to win the game, you must either destroy Tokyo by accumulating 20 destruction/victory points or be the only surviving monster once the fighting has ended.  You gain victory points by controlling Tokyo, you auto gain 1VP when you enter Tokyo, and at the start of the next round you gain 2VP from still controlling it.  But the downfall of that is you get whack by the other monsters, you also can whack them but you can't heal when you're in Tokyo.  You also gain VP from rolling 1, 2 and 3.

It takes a bit of strategy and luck!  I can't remember how many rounds we played, this game is a fast one cause it takes roughly 30 minutes or less.  I think there's one time it took us 15 minutes lols.  My monster died few times, I'm thinking it got something to do with the feng shui rotation, I won once from changing the sequence lol!

VICTORY!!! I AM THE KRAKEN! hur hur hur~

Just in case you couldn't understand that whole text thing, here's a funny video to better understand how the game works.

Overall it's a fun game, it could be addictive too.

And if you wish to purchase, it's available at Meeples Boardgame Store for RM149 (Normal Price) and RM79 for each of the expansion.

On another different story, a new boardgame shop open at Metro Town.  Woot woot?  Gamehaus Boardgame Station, not sure if it's open for business but it's official opening on 2nd May 2014, if anyone around that area, do check it out.  The event page, here.  I'll blog about it once I manage to get myself around that area again hee.

Thanks for reading.  Cheers!

P/S:  Where's all the boardgame chix?!
